iMore Editors' Choice for October 27, 2012

iMore Editors' Choice for October 27, 2012

Every week, the editors at iMore carefully select some of our favorite, most useful, most extraordinary apps, accessories, gadgets, and websites. This week's selections include an image upload service, a zombie game, a private social network for teams and families, a game featuring a classic cartoon character, a popular Xbox game that's been ported to the iPad, and an app filled with interesting, useless facts.

Droplr - Ally Kazmucha

When it comes to choosing an image upload service, I've always been a huge fan of Droplr. Not only do they have an iOS app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, but a ton of apps support it including many Twitter apps. This means that all the images you upload to Twitter will be saved to your Droplr account. This is great for times when you need to access a picture, video, or other file to share that you know you'd previously uploaded.

Hopping into the Droplr app allows you to view all your drops as well as grab the link to any of them or send them via message, e-mail, etc. I use the service a lot on my Mac just for simplicity's sake. I can drag any image or file to the Droplr icon in my task bar and it'll spit out a link that I can share.

When you start an account, you'll get 1GB of storage space for free which is plenty for most users, especially if you don't have an issue going through and clearing out old files you don't need anymore (which you can also do from the iOS app). If you need more space you can upgrade to a Pro account for $39.99 a year and that'll get you 100GB of space.

Zombies - Simon Sage

Zombies is a straightforward dual-stick bash-em-up game with an absolutely thumping soundtrack (http://bignic.bandcamp.com/album/zombies-soundtrack). Players have to dash through workplace-themed levels, blasting through hordes of zombies with a variety of weapons to find an exit. If you can, rescue fellow co-workers from a grisly fate along the way. Think of it as Office Space with the undead, the punchline being that middle management was always a bunch of brainless drones anyway. The animation in the game is much better than the stylish pixel art would have you believe, plus just about everything has some degree of destructibility. The look might seem a bit derivative of Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery, but putting it all into the modern office setting with plenty of zombies to thwak keeps the style very fresh. The dialog and story are cute and quirky, even if the voice acting leaves a little to be desired.

Right now Zombies is only available for iPhone, but I've been testing out a Universal version that's due to launch publicly soon.

Glassboard - Rene Ritchie

Glassboard comes from Brent Simmons, who previously created NetNewsWire and MarsEdit. Once again, Brent is taking an internet problem still in search of a better solution and offering just that. In this case, it's private networking. Others have tried this, but almost universally they've stayed bound to the web or for other reasons their mobile clients, frankly, have sucked. Glassboard was born to mobile.

Available for both iOS and Android, and as a website if you really have to, it lets anyone create boards, share them with office teams large and small, conference groups, family, and friends, and quickly, easily share comments, pictures, and otherwise stay in immediate contact. It's fast, it's fluid, and for what it does, it's fantastic.

It's also free, though there's a pro version available with additional features (and more to come).

Now we just need a desktop client so I never have to open the website again.

He-Man - The Most Powerful Game in The Universe - Chris Parsons

He-Man is back and this time, it's actually something done with the IP that is great! He-Man - The Most Powerful Game in The Universe is a humorously animated side scroller that features 27 levels of gaming across the He-Man world of Eternia. You'll take on Skeletor, Beast Man and other as well, team up with Orco, Man of Arms all in an effort to defend the secrets of Castle Grayskull. The controls are a little hard to get used to but overall, once you get the hang of them.. you'll have the power! For any fan of the franchise, this is an awesome buy. If you're new to He-Man, it's still an awesome buy and one that you can get into rather easily, without knowing the He-Man background.

Bastion - Joseph Keller

Bastion was first released on the Xbox Live Arcade in 2011, and is now available for the iPad. It is one of the better games I?ve played on any platform. With a beautiful, vibrant art style, solid gameplay and a great soundtrack, Bastion stands out amongst other App Store offerings. Bastion uses a both gameplay and a voiceover to tell its story, and the voiceover reacts dynamically to player decisions. The controls can be changed between tapping your character?s destination to a more traditional, joystick-style setup. With a variety of weapons and items, you can customize your gameplay experience and special abilities. It?s a lot of fun just to play around with the different special actions to see what you prefer. These various elements come together to give the you a great gaming experience. If you enjoy action-adventure games, it really doesn?t get much better than Bastion.

Weird But True - Leanna Lofte

Weird But True is an iPhone and iPad app that is actually targeted for kids, but it's even cool for adults. It's simply an app filled with random facts. For example, did you know that the world's biggest flower can grow wider than a car tire? Or that there are about a billion bacteria in your mouth right now? This is the type of valuable information you'll learn with Weird But True. Any child old enough to read will think it's hilarious and even grown adults will find some of the facts to be unusual and surprising.

Your choice?

Now that we've chosen our favorites for the week, we want to hear yours! Did you pick up a killer app, accessory, or game this week? Let us know in the comments below!

Microsoft officially launches Windows 8

14 hrs.

Microsoft Thursday?launched Windows 8, the latest version of its operating system, a version it hopes will be modern enough to keep existing users and draw new ones to it.

Steven Sinofsky, president of Windows and Windows Live, kicked off the event in New York City?by saying?that Microsoft is celebrating the global availability of Windows 8 on Thursday.?

Sinofsky revealed that WIndows 7, the prior version of Microsoft's desktop operating system, has sold more than?670 million licenses. Yes, over?670,000,000 copies of Windows 7 are out there in the world, on people's computers. Windows 8?uses Windows 7 as its foundation, so naturally there are high expectations. The new?operating system has undergone more than 1,240,000,000 hours of testing, according to Sinofsky.

Sinofsky referenced the days when we were basically "living in caves," the time of Windows 95. He used memories of that era to emphasize just how far Microsoft's operating system has come. Now, more than?1,000 PCs have been certified for Windows 8, bringing on what the folks at Microsoft describe as a new era of computing (and of Windows).

Sinofsky did at one point acknowledge that some folks might call out Microsoft's newly launched app store for having a small selection of apps, in comparison to what is available on other platforms, such as Apple and Google.

"We see today as a grand opening, and a very strong one," he said. And he says that there are more apps in the Windows app store than there were in any competitor's at launch.

Microsoft executives Mike Angiulo and Julie Larson-Green offered a demonstration of Windows 8 on older (and updated) devices, as well as on new gadgets. They emphasized how the new operating system runs significantly faster than its predecessor on older devices?? cheers were heard from a group in the audience when this detail was pointed out?? but focused on all the new Windows 8 devices hitting the market right now.

After Angiulo and Larson-Green wrapped up their demonstration, the booming voice of Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer flooded the event space. "It's an exciting day," he declared.

Ballmer walked everyone, once again, through the basics of the Windows 8 ecosystem, declaring several features as working ?"magically."

With Windows 8, "seeing, touching, clicking, and swiping is really?believing," Ballmer says. "Welcome to the world of Windows 8."

New glow for electron microscopy: Protein-labeling technique allows high-resolution visualization of molecules inside cells

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? The glowing green molecule known as green fluorescent protein (GFP) has revolutionized molecular biology. When GFP is attached to a particular protein inside a cell, scientists can easily identify and locate it using fluorescence microscopy. However, GFP can't be used with electron microscopy, which offers much higher resolution than fluorescence microscopy.

Chemists from MIT have now designed a GFP equivalent for electron microscopy -- a tag that allows scientists to label and visualize proteins with unprecedented clarity.

"With things that may appear only a few pixels across by fluorescence microscopy -- for example, a mitochondrion -- you can't make out any of the internal features. But with electron microscopy it's very easy to discern the intricate internal structures," says Jeff Martell, a graduate student in chemistry at MIT and lead author of a paper describing the new tag in the Oct. 21 online edition of Nature Biotechnology.

The new tag could help scientists pinpoint the locations of many cell proteins, providing new insight into those proteins' functions, according to the researchers.

Improving on nature

Dubbed APEX, the new tag is similar to naturally occurring proteins that have been tried as imaging labels for electron microscopy. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) is one commonly used tag, but it works only in a few compartments of a cell. Other recently developed tags work throughout a cell but are technically challenging to use because they require light to be shined on the sample and oxygen to be bubbled through it.

To improve on these methods, the researchers started with a protein similar to HRP, called ascorbate peroxidase (APX). APX is more versatile than HRP because it can function within a cell's cytosol, in the main cavity of a cell.

Both HRP and APX belong to a class of enzymes called peroxidases, which remove an electron and a proton from other molecules in a process known as oxidation. Every peroxidase has different targets, and one of HRP's main targets is a molecule called DAB, which when oxidized can be visualized with electron microscopy. The researchers genetically engineered APX so that it would also target DAB.

To use this new APEX tag (for "engineered APX"), the researchers deliver, into a living cell, a small ring of DNA containing the APEX gene joined to the gene for the protein they plan to image. The cell then produces the target protein, bound to the APEX protein.

Next, the researchers need to deliver DAB, which is not normally found in cells. This delivery takes place during the process of "fixing," or stabilizing cells, which must be done before they can be imaged with electron microscopy.

When the APEX protein oxidizes DAB, it generates radicals that rapidly clump together into a tarlike polymer. That polymer can be detected through electron microscopy, allowing the researchers to pinpoint the location of the target protein.

Biological question resolved

To demonstrate the usefulness of their new tag, the researchers set out to resolve an open question regarding the location of a calcium channel protein discovered last year. Two research groups identified the protein and reported that it is located within mitochondria, but they had conflicting theories as to its precise location and orientation. Using the new imaging technique, the MIT-led team labeled the protein and determined that it is embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane and faces into the innermost part of mitochondria, the mitochondrial matrix.

The team also showed that the new tag can label proteins throughout the cell -- not only within mitochondria but also in the nucleus, the endoplasmic reticulum and the cytosol.

Martell and Alice Ting, the Ellen Swallow Richards Associate Professor of Chemistry at MIT and senior author of the Nature Biotechnology paper, invented the new technology. Other authors who helped to test the tag and explore biological applications are Mark Ellisman, Thomas Deerinck and Gina Sosinsky of the University of California at San Diego, Yasemin Sancak and Vamsi Mootha of Harvard Medical School, and Thomas Poulos of the University of California at Irvine.

In current studies, the researchers are working on filling entire cells, such as neurons, with their imaging agent. This allows certain neurons in an electron microscope image to stand out, making it easier to trace the connections they make with other neurons. For that project, the MIT researchers are collaborating with Joshua Sanes, a professor of molecular and cellular biology at Harvard University, who says he believes the new labeling technology will be very useful.

"We want to find the exact connections that these cells are making, and APEX is a good way to label cells for electron microscopy. We can label specific types of cells and figure out how they fit into the neural circuitry," Sanes says.

Ting and Martell have filed for a patent on their imaging technology and are now working on making the APEX molecule more stable and better able to bind heme (an iron atom embedded in an organic compound), which is necessary for it to function properly.

The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Jamie Dupree's Washington Insider: New Obama ad attacks on foreign policy

By Jamie Dupree

From Boca Raton, Florida -

President Obama is out with a new ad attacking Mitt Romney on foreign policy, just hours before the two men are set to meet in their third and final debate before Election Day.

"President Obama ended the Iraq War; Mitt Romney would have left 30,000 troops there," the ad says, contrasting their views on Iraq and Afghanistan.

Thinking back on how controversial the Iraq War was, does this issue still play with voters in 2012?

Iraq could certainly come up in tonight's debate here at Lynn ?University in Florida.

Romney could win the popular vote -- and still lose

For Democrats still wounded over the 2000 election?that is to say, any Democrat born before about 1985?2012 could be the year of retribution. There is a distinct possibility that former Gov. Mitt Romney could win the popular vote and still lose the election to President Barack Obama.

In roughly 45 clinical trials, American democracy has produced four presidents who did not win the popular vote: John Quincy Adams in 1824, Rutherford B. Hayes in 1876, Benjamin Harrison in 1888 and George W. Bush in 2000. (There have been 56 presidential elections, but popular vote data doesn't exist for the first 10 or so.) The Food and Drug Administration would soundly reject a drug that caused some horrible disfigurement upward of 10 percent of the time, but Americans appear to tolerate a constitution that rewards the overall loser this often. Consensus on the subject is difficult to build. Even though a majority of Americans support abolishing the Electoral College, the present system only punishes one side or the other at the same time.

National polls swung dramatically in Romney's direction after he trounced Obama in the first debate. The odds that Obama will secure re-election under the Signal's model dipped in tandem, but never below about 60 percent. The reason is so familiar that the O, H, and I keys on my keyboards are wearing thin.

Sources: Betfair, Intrade, IEM, HuffPost Pollster and RealClearPolitics

To be clear, we don't necessarily think Romney will win the popular vote. Standing in national polls does not predict actual vote share, and those polls are swinging back in the president's favor. Romney's odds of winning a majority of the ballots, however, are higher than his odds of winning at least 270 electoral votes. This year, the Electoral College unfairly favors Obama: Romney must carry Florida, Virginia and Ohio, while Obama needs only one of them.

The latest Gallup tracking poll of likely national voters has Romney up by 7 points. A lot of virtual ink has been spilled on how and why Gallup's poll has become an outlier: I suggest Alan Abramowitz, Mark Blumenthal or Nate Silver on the subject.?The more meaningful aggregation of polls at?Pollster and RealClearPolitics both report a statistical tie between Obama and Romney in the national polls.

Of the three states Romney needs to win, Florida (80.0 percent likely for Romney) and Virginia (61.9 percent likely for Romney) are both leaning in his favor. Ohio has stubbornly remained in Obama's camp, with a 65.0 percent chance of going to Democrats. Obama held firm in the state after his Oct. 3 debate debacle, Ohio's economy is doing relatively well, and early voting is already under way, minimizing the impact of late-breaking events.

Let the pundits tie themselves into knots over the latest Gallup poll. As usual, what America wants is immaterial compared to the desires of the Buckeye State.

Raleigh Little Theatre's The 39 Steps is Not for Everybody | Triangle ...

The Raleigh Little Theatre cast for ?Alfred Hitchcock?s The 39 Steps? includes (from left) Tony Hefner, Jesse R. Gephart, Staci Sabarsky, and Del Flack (photo by Curtis Brown Photography)

Any fan of the 1935 film The 39 Steps or any Alfred Hitchcock devotee should be positively delighted with Raleigh Little Theatre?s production of the play by the same name. Others, however, will likely be lost, bored, and a little overwhelmed with this excessively silly and frenzied comedy. The show follows Richard Hannay (Jesse Gephart) on a misadventure that begins when he meets a secretive woman, Annabella (Staci Sabarsky) at a theatre. He allows her to stay in his home overnight, wakes up to find that she has been murdered, and then spends the rest of the play on the run and falling into one blunder after another.

Though the beginning of the show is intriguing, things quickly go downhill. After the first six or seven ?comedic? mishaps, the production turns into one long, confusing blur with the same jokes being repeated over and over again and Hitchcock references being thrown in haphazardly. While most audience members wait patiently for the ending, which seems to never come, many at Sunday?s matinee did not return after the intermission, and it?s hard to blame them.

To be fair, the small cast (which the script calls for) gives it their all. Gephart is characteristically funny and goofy, making him perfect for his singular role. The rest of the cast, however, juggles multiple roles. Sabarsky is sometimes charming and fun to watch, taking turns as characters Annabella, Margaret, and Pamela, but her unclear accents and often-flat delivery could stand some work. Tony Hefner and Del Flack add some much needed humor (the kind that?s actually funny!) in their constantly-changing ?clown? roles.

While there are likely a few people out there who will get their kicks with this show and find it uproariously funny, most will wish they?d sat this one out. It is simply too outdated, too over-the-top, and just too silly for modern viewers.

Russia's Rosneft buys out TNK-BP

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russian state-owned oil giant Rosneft strengthened its hold on the country's lucrative oil industry Monday when it sealed a $61 billion deal, buying TNK-BP, the joint venture between a group of Russian oil oligarchs, and BP, the British the energy company.

BP announced Monday that it had agreed to sell its 50 percent stake in TNK-BP to Rosneft for $17.1 billion in cash and a 12.84 percent stake in the Russian oil group.

In Moscow, Rosneft said it had also agreed to buy the other 50 percent in the joint venture from AAR for $28 billion. Rosneft said the deal with AAR is "entirely independent of the transaction with BP." The Russian oil group said it would finance the deal with its own cash as well as new borrowings.

Rosneft CEO Igor Sechin broke the news about the deal Monday afternoon to President Vladimir Putin, telling him that the deal would be worth about $61 billion.

"This is a good big deal which is important not only for Russia's energy sector but for the entire Russian economy," Putin said in remarks carried by Russian television.

Rosneft shares jumped more than 3 percent on the announcement but rolled back to its morning level of 215 rubles per share, or 1.2 percent up.

BP shares were down 0.3 percent to 449 pence following the announcement. BP said that it would use some of the money from its deal to raise its stake in Rosneft to 19.75 percent.

Russia is an important part of BP's business, accounting for a quarter of its oil production. BP Chief Executive Bob Dudley has looked to the country's vast oil resources as a key ingredient to the company's recovery from the disastrous oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The TNK-BP joint venture has been troublesome ? albeit lucrative ? for BP. The UK oil group's disputes with its partner ? in 2011, it tried to strike a separate partnership with Rosneft to explore for oil beneath the Arctic Ocean, only to be sued by AAR ? have alarmed BP's investors and hit its share price.

Dudley said in the statement on Monday that "BP intends to be a long-term investor in Rosneft - an investment which I believe will deliver value for our shareholders over the next decade and beyond."

Sechin sounded optimistic about their tie-up with BP, saying that his company "would benefit from BP's experience and its track record of implementing best international practices in Russia."

Ratings agency Fitch last week warned Rosneft of a possible rating downgrade because of the TNK-BP deal. Fitch said the Russian company should have no problems raising the money to pay for 50 percent, but said the purchase of the other 50 percent could require so much borrowing that it could lead to a downgrade.

Succeed Online By Increasing Your Affiliate Marketing Knowledge ...

Succeed Online By Increasing Your Affiliate Marketing Knowledge With These Top Tips

There are very respectable profits to be made in affiliate marketing, as many webmasters know from experience. With a little bit of research, you can make money with affiliate marketing too. Reading this article is a great start to maximizing your online marketing potential.

Listing the possible alternative uses of products you are selling as an affiliate can be great for business, whenever applicable. Your high-lipped mat can double as a tray for pet food and water, or even a dish drainer.

When trying to better your affiliate promotion business, all content produced should have positive language. Avoid using negative turns of phrases. g.

Design a newsletter that people will want to read because of its format and useful content. Receiving email used to be a novel experience back in the Internet?s early days. These days they are rightfully overprotective of their privacy and do whatever is necessary to avoid junk mail. Therefore your newsletter must be designed to be a welcome change from the ordinary sales pitch.

At some point in your affiliate promotion career, you?re going to want to begin using paid advertising services like Google Ads. They supply keyword friendly ads to increase sales on your site. It is a targeted approach for online publishers, with revenues generated by showing relevant ads that are more likely to attract buyers.

Be sure to understand your public when choosing affiliates. This will, of course, draw more visitors, but more importantly, it will communicate to potential customers that you know what they want and need.

You should engage an internet marketing service that is well established because it is important to deal with an honest company. Be transparent about your affiliates and describe the purpose of your site. If visitors do not feel like you are being honest about the affiliations you are a part of, they can just click out of your site and buy straight from the merchant selling the product.

Consider implementing handwritten ads on your website. This kind of personal touch can show buyers the person behind the service or product, and thus increase your sales. If you dislike writing things by hand, or have illegible handwriting, hire a freelancer to help you create the ad.

Market yourself in quite a few different places. A part of your customer base will prefer searching the web for deals. Other people might respond better to tangible items like fliers or brochures. Some customers need a discount coupon to get them to pull the trigger. By exploiting as many different marketing methods as you can, you?ll reach a wider audience.

You can generate more business for your online company by joining affiliate marketing programs. Affiliate links are click magnets compared to other forms of advertising such as banners and context links. Here are three things to think about when you are looking for a good web marketing program: 1/ Ease of navigation. 2/ Popularity of the program. 3/ The amount of money you will receive for each referral.

You should try to utilize secret links. There are a number of ways to include links in your text without them being intrusive. If you do this, make sure your readers understand what?s going on. When your readers know what they are going to be visiting, they will be more likely to click on your links.

When you are monitoring affiliate statistics, don?t forget to evaluate where your links are performing best. Changing the position of the link can let you see where it helps your website the most. Keep the page the same, except for where you place your link.

Backlinks that connect to legitimate, relevant content are a vital part of successful internet marketing. A visitor who clicks on an ?HP tablet PC? link is not going to be happy when he or she arrives at your webpage selling Apple iPads. Although you might think your strategy is clever, page mismatch could remove trust from visitors.

It?s imperative to have access to real time statistics. They let you know many people have visited your site, where they came from, and how many purchases have been made.

When choosing affiliate products to promote, see how each company tracks sales coming from your efforts, that don?t go through the site directly. If you do not have a reliable way of tracking transactions that occur through phone and mail, you may be losing a hefty chunk of your commission.

Don?t be satisfied with the profits you are making; always strive for more. There is never a point where you should just sit back and rest on your laurels. Create a new blog or a new site that will generate even higher profits. The most important thing is to keep going.

The most effective affiliate companies support affiliates and assist in cross-selling products. Affiliate companies are smart, at least most of them are. They do a lot of research to find out what kind of marketing is most successful for converting customers. The more established companies share this information with affiliates so they can personalize their campaigns for better sales and commissions.

Make it a point to avoid engaging in dishonest practices that compromise your site visitors? privacy. This can make your site visitors feel resentful. In the worst case, it could break apart the critical tracking chains for your affiliate customers, or allow the spreading of computer viruses.

A 100% commission compensation plan might be a scam, but you won?t know unless you investigate. Many times these programs are over looked because people think they are too good to be true. Take the time and read the small print to find out what they are offering. When an affiliate will offer 100% commission, they do this so they can take the continuing subscription sales for themselves. This is actually a fairly common practice in internet marketing. Read the fine print when you find an offer that resembles this kind of program, as it could be just the program for you.

Use the points in this article when starting your own affiliate marketing endeavor. You can expand your success by capitalizing on the tricks and knowledge of those who have come before you.

Six Afghan police killed in insider attack

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) ? An Afghan police officer and cook poisoned their colleagues at a checkpoint in an assault coordinated with insurgent fighters that left six dead in the country's south, officials said Saturday.

It was the latest in a string of attacks from inside the Afghan army and police that are threatening to undermine both the partnership with international troops ? which have been the target of many attacks ? and the morale of Afghan forces, who have suffered equally heavy casualties from such strikes.

The police officer and the cook worked with outside insurgents in the assault, which hit police manning a checkpoint in the Gereshk district of Helmand province, the governor's office said in a statement.

They poisoned two of the officers and then the militants attacked from outside, killing the remaining four officers, provincial spokesman Ahmad Zirak said. He did not say how the officers were poisoned. The police officer was captured as he fled, but the cook escaped and remains at large, Zirak added.

The gunmen escaped by motorcycle with weapons and ammunition, the governor's statement said.

A recent upsurge in the number of insider attacks on coalition troops by Afghan soldiers or police ? or insurgents disguised in their uniforms ? has further undermined public support for the war in the West. So far this year, at least 52 foreign troops ? about half of them Americans ? have been killed in insider attacks.

The Afghan government has not provided statistics on the number of its forces killed in insider attacks. However, U.S. military statistics obtained by The Associated Press show at least 53 members of the Afghan security forces had been killed in such strikes by the end of August.

Meanwhile, a Taliban attack elsewhere in Helmand killed two district community council members, while Taliban-fired rocket-propelled grenades destroyed a warehouse full of food destined for the main U.S. base in Afghanistan.

Insurgents ambushed the council members while they were driving to a tribal meeting in the volatile Sangin district, the governor's office said in its statement.

The attack against the council members is a reminder of the other worrying trend in insurgent tactics this year ? a shift toward more targeted killings of those affiliated with the government. The United Nations has recorded a sharp increase in such killings in the first six months of 2012 as compared with the same period of 2011.

The jump in insider attacks and assassinations are throwing doubt on the capability of the Afghan government and security forces to take over as international troops reduce their presence. The U.S. has pulled back the "surge" troops President Barack Obama sent soon after he took office, and other members of the international coalition have already started drawing down their forces ahead of a planned handover to the Afghans in 2014.

But Kabul's Western allies also are trying to assure the Afghans that they are not deserting them, and several countries have reached agreements with Afghanistan pledging at least financial assistance past 2014.

France, for one, recently signed a treaty with Afghanistan pledging such help, a deal that French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told reporters in Kabul on Saturday "symbolizes our friendship, our cooperation."

He noted that France is committing funds at a time when its budget is strained and said that while the remaining forces will not be fighting, they will be an essential part of a smooth transition to Afghan control.

About 2,000 French troops are departing by the end of this year, which will leave about 1,400 to help with training Afghan security forces and logistics.

In Saturday's warehouse attack, insurgents fired rocket-propelled grenades at a compound used by military contractor Supreme Group to store food and other supplies destined for Bagram Air Field, the main U.S. base in the country. A warehouse inside the compound caught fire in the assault and burned through the night.

"The local fire brigade attended the scene and brought the fire under control, but the warehouse itself and all contents were destroyed," Victoria Frost, a spokeswoman for Supreme Group in Dubai, wrote in an email. She said no one was injured and staff at the site did not have to evacuate.

The fire could still be seen burning Saturday morning, said Mohammad Asif, the deputy administrator for Bagram district, where the compound is located. He said the Supreme compound encompasses about five hectares (12 acres).

Frost said the fire was contained much earlier.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in an email that the fire at the Supreme Group compound destroyed a "large stock of food meant for U.S. troops."

Frost did not say how much material was destroyed though she did say it was "primarily food supplies," adding that the company was working to make up the loss with inventory from other warehouses.

Senior Care and What to Expect | Information

If you?re ever asked to give elder care for a loved one, not knowing what to do or how to perform will probably be an amazing learning experience. However, assuming it will likely be done in your own house should lessen your apprehension. For the most part you?ll be able to continue with your daily home duties. You?ll have to learn in a short time in order to be effective. And you will certainly learn things about that individual that will be a surprise to you. Essentially, you will be faced with a life-changing experience as a care giver. In this article we will explore what it might be like if you were to provide senior care.

Often it takes a couple of days to establish a routine that will conform to the schedule. Senior care, performed in this manner, will allow you to create good habits and guarantee that every one the necessary steps required are covered. What many people do not realize is when providing home care for others, the individual deserves the dignity anyone would expect themselves. Therefore it is important that they feel comfortable mentally as well as physically.

When accepting the responsibility of taking care of others, you will quickly learn their personalities, the things they prefer to eat, what programs that they like to watch ? even what books they love to read. As most elderly folks don?t want to be cared for, keeping them comfortable is very important, not merely for their sake, but for the sake of your own mental well being. Once you start to establish a relationship together with your patient, they?ll begin to trust you. Their trust in you will quickly lead to compromise regarding differences of opinion between the care giver and the senior. Once that trust is gained, a friendly relationship begins to sprout making everything run smoother for both. The best relationship is one containing formed mutual respect.

With elder care you may be responsible to perform tasks that are less than desirable. And cleaning up after an elderly person who has defecated could very well be part of your daily routine. Remember, they don?t enjoy it either, they would rather do this themselves, however for some, it?s just impossible. When medicating an elderly person, caution has to be observed. You?re in charge of administering the correct dosage and be certain the medications are swallowed. This is where the senior is heavily dependent upon you for their very existence. You ought to have a conversation with their physician regarding their health for a better understanding of exactly what the requirements are for dispensing medications.

Taking care of people who suffer from Alzheimers disease, can be very eye opening. To reside under the same roof with a person that has this condition can be disheartening, and you will have to practically coddle that person. This type of senior care can be extremely demanding, and in many cases the afflicted won?t know the time of day or the names of family members. In most cases you will have to wheel them to the doctors office, to the table for food or for bathroom duty. Most are totally incapacitated.

When providing senior care, family members may want to routinely visit. It is really an chance for the elderly to have contact with their loved ones that will hopefully provide some smiles and happy moments. It is important that your home care is routine in nature, but just a little excitement makes life rosier and contributes to a feeling of well being.

Providing home care for the elderly has its moments, especially in the beginning stages. But as time passes, you?ll become accustomed to all the nuances that create an environment of trust and mutual respect. You will eventually know everything there is to know about those you care for. You will have trying times and memorable moments combined to make it all work out ultimately. You need to be on your toes all the time because you are greatly needed.

John Hotaling worked in senior home care facilities prior to becoming a writer, and has written articles about the benefits of senior care ever since. Pumpkin Spice Hot Chocolate | recipe from FatFree Vegan Kitchen

Spiced Pumpkin Hot Chocolate

Welcome to Weekend Quickies?quick recipes that won?t cut into your weekend relaxation time. Today?s ridiculously easy recipe is brought to you courtesy of my last recipe, Mary?s Pumpkin Walnut Muffins, and more particularly by the half cup of pumpkin that is left over from a 15-ounce can after you make that recipe. Here?s a delicious drink that uses that leftover pumpkin and takes only about 10 minutes to prepare.

Imagine pumpkin pie and hot chocolate all mixed up together and poured into a mug and you?ve got this drink. Actually, it tastes better than that sounds! It?s spicy and sweet and warming on a chilly October day. I dressed mine up with a little foamy soymilk that I whipped up with a simple milk frother. It doesn?t work well with all soymilks, but the store-brand vanilla soymilk that I used foamed up quickly and even made little whipped cream-like peaks. You may have to test several brands before you find one that foams up that thick (hint: Silk Vanilla in the aseptic boxes does not work).

Also, if it?s not ?curl up with a hot drink? weather in your neighborhood, you can easily turn this beverage into a pudding with the addition of cornstarch and a few extra minutes of cooking time. See the notes in the recipe for more details.

Spiced Pumpkin Hot Chocolate

Pumpkin Spice Hot Chocolate

I served this with a dollop of frothy soymilk on top.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups non-dairy milk
  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 3/4 ? 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • stevia or other sweetener to taste

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients except sweetener in blender. Blend at medium speed until smooth. Check sweetness and add sweetener to taste; blend once more.
  2. Pour into a saucepan or microwaveable container and heat, stirring at regular intervals, until steaming. Pour into two mugs and serve.

Notes

You can easily take this from a beverage to a dessert by making it into pudding. Add 2 1/2 tablespoons of cornstarch to the mixture in the blender and blend well. Heat on the stove or in the microwave, stirring constantly (or once every minute in the microwave), until it boils and thickens. Pour into 4 dessert bowls and refrigerate until set.

Preparation time: 5 minute(s) | Cooking time: 5 minute(s)

Number of servings (yield): 2
